Romilly Park
Set close to the Knap and the beautiful surroundings of Romilly Park in Barry, St Aubin Romilly Park first opened in December 1998 and has been welcoming local children and families ever since.
The nursery provides a warm, homely environment for babies, toddlers and nursery-aged children, with dedicated, self-contained areas designed around each stage of their development.
Romilly Park is an English-medium nursery, with Welsh introduced naturally throughout the day. It is also registered as a Flying Start setting, providing funded early-years childcare for eligible families.
On the first floor of the nursery is the baby unit which is home to up to 21 of our smallest friends aged between 6 weeks and 22 months.
A home from home, away from all the hustle and bustle of the outside world you will find a soothing and tranquil baby environment. Split into 4 age appropriate rooms the unit is brimmed with opportunities for play and exploration at every level of development. The smallest of our little friends enjoy their own little hideaway away from the main room, with lots of natural experiences for them to enjoy. Home for up to 9 babies from 6 weeks until they are mobile, the babies enjoy the freedom of exploring the toys around them with the staff lovingly cushioning their first attempts at moving around. The room benefits from its own feeding area and messy play area as well as a carpeted play area.
When the little ones become more mobile they move along the corridor towards the older baby room, where they can freely explore 3 large rooms brimmed with exciting opportunities. Complete with a child size role play area, book corner, sensory corner, messy play areas and table s at the babies height, the baby unit it a hive of wonderful activity. A nappy changing room lead from the main rooms so everything the babies need is close by.
Whilst in our baby unit, the babies enjoy their very own programme of activities such as painting or messy play.
The babies also enjoy frequent walks to the local parks, which provides them with the all important fresh air that they need for a healthy development.
Meal times in the baby unit are used to provide those initial social stages. Learning from each other we believe and recognise the importance of group feeding times and therefore the children will use each other as their learning tools.
At this tender young age the babies will naturally need to be provided with a tranquil area for which to sleep. Our baby bedrooms hold cots, and sleep mats for the youngsters to rest themselves and re- charge their batteries ready for their next adventure. Here they will find soothing music whilst the staff stay to soothe/ rock a child whilst they drift to sleep.
When the children are ready and as the children progress their journey will take them downstairs to our toddler unit. Home for toddlers between the ages of 18 months to 2 ½ this unit offers large open plan rooms for the children to explore whilst in a safe and stimulating environment. Their day here is full of fun age appropriate activities that help to build on their existing knowledge and understanding. Whilst here the children will enjoy a range of messy play and cooking activities and will often bring one of their creations home for you to experience. Photographs will be used within the nursery to show you all the little things that they have done during their time with us.
At this age the children will journey on through the process of toilet training and with the toilets built at their level we can assist them along this process.
Meal times in toddlers are a very important and busy time of the day. The children dine in groups with a member of staff so that they may get the close attention that they need at this young age. This also helps them to begin to explore those all important social graces and table manners that will become all the more important later on.
Naturally as their day is packed full with exciting things the children become tired and do still appreciate time to rest during the day. With this in mind a rest room is set up for them to revive themselves so that they are ready for their next exciting adventure.
At approximately 2 ½ the children will complete their journey to the nursery section of the nursery. Emphasis is put upon a child directed learning way of thinking to allow the children to explore and take ownership for their own learning. Here a range of experiences are given to the children to explore and develop their own skills in a stimulating and age appropriate environment.
With 3 large open plan rooms and an outdoor classroom leading from the space, the children are encouraged to move around the learning stations and seek exciting development opportunities. The nursery plan under the guidelines of the new curriculum for Wales and so the children’s ideas, thought and interests are at the heart of all that we plan. Toilet training and personal skills continue to be scaffold in this unit to prepare the children for their future time in school. The unit is a happy mix of hustle and bustle, with the children given extra freedom and responsibility to prepare them for their next steps.
Behind the nursery is the enclosed garden space where the children can release some of their energy using the range of toys and equipment available to them. The child safe surface that surrounds the climbing apparatus ensure that they have the freedom to explore safely with reduced risks of accidents.
The large outdoor space available at St. Aubin is designed to house a range of bikes and equipment to allow the children to make the most of the outdoors. Chalking, painting, water and sand play can also be seen to happen outside of the internal walls. Benefitting from a large corner plot the garden offers a great space for the children to let off steam and explore the outdoor world.
The garden benefits from a large children’s climbing frame and constructions site, as well as a range of outdoor play toys.
The children also enjoy planned visits outside the confines of the nursery building to places such as the local parks, police stations or such like. This allows them to appreciate their natural surroundings and explore what goes on outside of their nursery life. Naturally these visits will take place taking safety precautions and all children will wear wrist straps or reigns when outside of the nursery building.
